Thanks for getting a blog. Nice idea to link some historic MIles.
As a youngster, my friend's Mom bought the successor to Bitch's Brew, Miles Davis' iconic Big Fun double album with the 1970s cartoon styled art. It more or less changed my life. I couldn't believe the list of musicians that contributed. Joe Zawinul. John McLaughlin. Chick Corea. Herbie Hancock. Bennie Maupin. Stanley Clarke. Ron Carter. Billy Cobham. Airto Moreira. Incredible! The thing was that all of these top musicians were under the complete control and subservience to the musical vision of MIles Davis. a Leonard Bernstein of fusion jazz, if you will.
Five years later I bought a ten-inch record on the venerated Dial label in a thrift shop. Can't remember the title, something about Yardbirds. "Yardbird Suite?" It was a Charlie Parker EP from about 1947. On one side was the Charlie Parker Septet, featuring Dizzie Gillespie. On the flip-side was the Charlie Parker Quintet featuring a very promising young trumpeter by the name of Mile Davis.
Songs included A Night in Tunisia, Lover Man, Bebop, Yardbird Suite, Ornithology, Max Making Wax and The Gypsy. It was the definitive, mass-produced bebop album of post-war America.
God places people in our lives to guide us in the true path.
Hi Flying! Yeap I was in the mood for some Miles last night! The greatest! Jazz for me is just my favorite music. But as they say, "there's jazz, and then there's Miles" ;)
